The BFG seems much less than friendly when Sophie first catches a glimpse of him in the evening gloom. However, after having a bite to eat (snozzcumbers), being protected by the BFG while viewing other Giants and whizzpopping together, Sophie and the BFG quickly become friends. The BFG then teaches Sophie the magic of dreams. As the best of friends Sophie and the BFG set off on a grand adventure to save the world’s children from other, less than friendly, giants. The BFG, one of Roald Dahl’s most famous characters, is likely to capture the imagination of all dreamers. The book is a great introduction to longer books and will help encourage further reading.

Gertrude Chandler Warner’s wonderful first novel, The Boxcar Children, tells the story of four siblings, fearful of their new guardian after the death of their parents, who run away and create a home in an old abandoned boxcar. The story depicts their learning of the skills necessary to survive and remain a family. Though the children do eventually encounter and learn to love their paternal grandfather, children will find this a wonderful story of their own resilience and creativity. Later books in the series present mysteries young readers will enjoy solving.
